The 21st edition of BÁRAKÚ, an annual drawing workshop and interactive art session for schools, will take place from November 20 to 22, 2026, at Freedom Park, Lagos Island, Lagos, as part of LABAF 2026, presented by the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA).

With the theme “Africa’s First Nobel Prize, Tribute to KONGI,” this year’s workshop will engage children in caricature drawing of Professor Wole Soyinka, commemorating the 40th anniversary of his Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in 1986.

The workshop will feature Walé Asubiojo, MSNA, a Nigerian sculptor, cultural researcher and art educator known for using art to preserve African history and heritage. Through his artistic practice and years of mentoring young people, Asubiojo continues to promote the importance of connecting creativity with cultural knowledge and social responsibility.

His participation reflects a long-standing commitment to introducing children to art as a means of learning, observation and cultural expression. By encouraging young participants to interpret Soyinka through caricature, BÁRAKÚ offers them an opportunity to explore drawing while engaging with the legacy of one of Africa’s most celebrated literary figures.

The three-day programme begins daily at 10:00 a.m. at Freedom Park, Lagos Island. It is expected to provide a creative learning environment where schoolchildren can develop their drawing skills, express their ideas and appreciate the relationship between art, literature and African identity.

BÁRAKÚ 2026 is supported by Freedom Park and Black Heritage Studios.
