The Mask and the Cross goes to Washington

The significant journey of Bruce Onobrakpeya’s celebrated works, “The Mask and the Cross,” is set to captivate Washington, the U.S. capital this summer. These pieces, set against the backdrop of Nigeria’s critical moments- at the verge of independence from colonial rule—provide a deep dive into the rich fabric of African spirituality, melded with the teachings and resurrection of Christ.

After a highly praised solo exhibition at the High Museum in Atlanta, which concluded at the end of July 2023, curated by Lauren Tate Baeza “The Mask and the Cross” is geared up for its next outing as a traveling show. The esteemed Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. will house this extraordinary exhibition from June 23, 2024, through February 2025.

Anticipated to attract renowned African art aficionados and scholars, such as Janet Stanley Mimi Wolford, and Babatunde Lawal who have keenly followed Onobrakpeya’s artistic journey from its beginnings, the exhibition is set to be a landmark event. Their attendance highlights the importance of Onobrakpeya’s contributions to the domains of African art and cultural heritage, positioning “The Mask and the Cross” as a monumental exhibition that bridges geographical and temporal divides, celebrating Africa’s lasting legacy and dynamic essence.
