It was a thunderous showers of memorable rain at the opening reception of Harmattan Workshop organised by one of the yearly workshop participant at Agbarha Otor in Delta State, Nigeria, highly intelligent artist – Selma Etareri. The Austrian born artist out of inquisitive knowledge, travelled down to Nigeria in February to participate at the edition which was impactful and insightful.

Kunst- und Keramikstudio Selma Etareri did not leave any stones unturned as she showcases the illustrious talents of contemporary Nigerian artists in the heart of Austria. The Harmattan Workshop Exhibition, opening night on April 24, 2025, at Mariahilferstraße 11 in Graz, was an unforgettable experience. Running through May 31, 2025, this celebration of Nigerian art and culture is not to be missed at anytime being showcased in the beautiful city of Graz.

This special exhibition showcases a mix of art pieces, including prints, drawings, paintings, and photographs. It brings together works by Nigerian artists from the famous Harmattan Workshop, founded by Dr. Bruce Onobrakpeya. The exhibition also features ceramics by Selma Etareri, an Austrian artist and the host of the event. It’s a unique blend of cultures and artistic styles.

Despite the challenges of organising the event, including a torrential downpour on the opening night, Selma’s dedication paid off. “I was running until the last minute, but we still had a wonderful turnout of art enthusiasts,” she recalls. The concert that accompanied the exhibition was a highlight, featuring a unique blend of African art, Indian classical jazz, and Balkan Romani music. This fusion of styles not only celebrated the diversity of global cultures but also served as a powerful protest against fascism.

The exhibition was a profound affirmation to the boundless potential of art to bridge cultural divides. Each piece on display was a masterpiece in its own right, reflecting the creative synergy that defines the Harmattan Workshop. As Selma notes, “It was a boundless celebration of art, just the way I love it – and just the way we love it back home.” The event was a resounding success, showcasing the beauty of African art and culture in a global context.
