Tribute to Architect David Aradeon

Architect David Aradeon’s influence extended far beyond the buildings he designed. He was a moulder of minds, a teacher whose wisdom shaped generations of architects. His legacy endures through his students, who not only gained technical skills but also learned to appreciate the cultural significance of architecture.

David was a mentor and educator whose impact on architectural education in Nigeria is immeasurable. He instilled in his students a respect for heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern design, leaving an indelible mark on the future of Nigerian architecture.

A well-rounded man, David had a passion for photography and loved collecting modern art. His appreciation for the visual arts enriched his architectural work, drawing connections between design, culture, and personal expression.

His work reflected our collective story as a people, blending Nigeria’s architectural heritage with contemporary design. His buildings symbolized our culture, bearing the weight of history while embracing innovation. David’s contribution to Festac ‘77, where he showcased traditional Nigerian architectural models, was a testament to our rich cultural heritage on the global stage.

Our collaboration on several designs—such as the Onobrakpeya Art Center and the University of Lagos gatehouse—remains close to my heart, even though they were never realized. These projects symbolize David’s brilliance and creativity.

David’s humility belied his towering achievements. Receiving the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) Award alongside him was one of the proudest moments of my career.

To his wife Suzan and their children, I extend my deepest sympathies. David’s legacy will live on in the structures he created, the minds he shaped, and the vision he brought to life. His spirit remains etched into the landscape of our nation.
