Call for participation

We are delighted to announce the open call for our “Melanin Matters” two-day photography workshop.  

Taking place on 29 October and 5 November 2024, this workshop will provide a critical space of exchange and growth for emerging photographers and photo-based artists living and working in Lagos.   

This workshop will cover technical aspects and artistic approaches to capturing diverse skin tones. But skin is not only about aesthetics: How skin tones are represented matters. Therefore, we will also discuss how we perceive and think about skin and how photography impacts our view of skin tones.  

Participants will develop their own photography projects throughout the workshop. After the first workshop day, participants will have a week to carry out their own projects. After a week, the group will reconvene to showcase and discuss the works created!  

The workshop will be led by two experienced photographers, Rufai Ismaila @kingsvillevisualsgallery and Logor Olumuyiwa @logorofafrica. This two-day convening will provide a crucial opportunity for formal and conceptual development for each participant, preparing them to engage and excel within the global scene of photographic and artistic production. This workshop is co-organized by the University of Mainz, the Goethe-Institut and The Nlele Institute.

Participants must bring their own equipment.   
During the workshop days a catered lunch will be provided. In addition, a stipend will be paid out to cover costs.
