Musa Momoh Asuku, a Nigerian visual artist, has been making waves in the art world with his thought-provoking works. With a career in advertising, spanning over two decades, Asuku’s artistic journey is a testament to his passion, dedication, and creativity.

Asuku’s connection to Lagos runs deep, despite being a native of Okene in Kogi State. His family has called the city of Lagos home for years, and it was during his student days at the Federal Polytechnic in Auchi that he first visited his hometown of Okene. For the first time, he saw how his people look like, felt the power of tradition and culture of the people. It still gladdens his heart that he visited his hometown all alone.

After graduating, Asuku ventured into the world of advertising, working as an art designer for top firms in Lagos. His creative talents drove successful brand campaigns, captivating consumers nationwide. However, his true passion lay in painting, and it wasn’t long before he began to trace his roots to find a name for himself in the art world.

In 2024, Asuku participated in group exhibitions, including the Creative Tides exhibition held at the iconic National Museum Onikan in Lagos. His four showcased works were a testament to his mastery of colour expression, a hallmark of the School of Art and Design, Federal Polytechnic, Auchi.

Asuku’s participation in the Creative Tides exhibition marked a significant milestone in his career. Each piece conveyed powerful messages about relationships, identity, and human connection. His art is a call to action, urging viewers to overlook their differences and strive for a harmonious society.

One of his works, “Twins,” captured the innocence of childhood, emphasizing the importance of tolerance and understanding in human relationships. This piece, in particular, showcases Asuku’s ability to convey complex emotions through his art.

In addition to the Creative Tides exhibition, Asuku also participated earlier in the year, in two more group exhibitions organized by his original graduating set in 1999, entitled Constellation at Iwalewa Gallery of Art at Lekki, Lagos. His contribution to the Miniature Series exhibition, further solidified his position in the art world.

Asuku’s artistic journey is a testament to his dedication, passion, and creativity. When asked about balancing his advertising deadlines with his studio practice, Asuku revealed his secret: “I just have to find the balance. I come home from the office, tired, but whenever I remember I have to paint and come up with innovations, I gather the strength and build my focus on what I want to achieve.”

Asuku is set to participate in more group exhibitions before embarking on a solo exhibition in 2025. With his talent, passion, and dedication, Musa Momoh Asuku is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with in the art world.
