Since November 10th, 2025, Fobally Art World Africa has set the creative scene buzzing with its ongoing Aspired Lagos and Aspired Nigeria Art Competition, an ambitious platform designed to spotlight the artistic brilliance of secondary school students and undergraduates across the country. Now fully underway, and in its fourth year running, the competition has quickly become one of the most engaging youth-focused art initiatives of the year, inspiring young talents to step forward with bold ideas, fresh expressions, and innovative techniques.

Launched as a response to the growing need to nurture artistic potential among young Nigerians, the Aspired competitions aim to create a pipeline of future cultural leaders and visual storytellers. Students from various schools and states are currently participating, submitting artworks that reflect their world, experiences, dreams, and interpretations of contemporary issues. The competition welcomes a diversity of styles, ranging from drawing and painting to mixed media, digital art, and experimental concepts that is giving every participant the freedom to express creativity without boundaries.

“What makes the ongoing contest particularly compelling is its accessibility. Schools, art clubs, and university departments have embraced the opportunity, encouraging their students to take part,” remarks Folasade Abiola, the Creative Director at Fobally Art Gallery. As entries continue to pour in, judges and art enthusiasts are witnessing an impressive display of talent, passion, and technical skill from young creatives who are beginning to make their mark.

The judges led by renowned printmaker and former Dean, School of Art, Design and Printing, Yaba College of Technology Lagos have being so excited with the abundance of creative talents in these young ones. Apart from that, the students at the secondary school and undergraduate levels are conversant with their environments. This is so revealing from their creative writing and essays written in the presence of the judges. Many of the students have been able to write on contemporary issues which also inspired their live paintings, for submission in the gallery space of Fobally Art Gallery. Experimenting on societal and global issues such as the importance of food security and biodiversity, the dark side of economic sabotage and ethnic rivalries, also their negative impact on developing countries like Nigeria. These young ones are indeed a heritage for Nigeria. Their environments shape their imaginations.

In fact, Nigeria’s future, identity, continuity and strength rest in its children.

Beyond the contest itself, Fobally Art World Africa envisions the Aspired platform as a developmental ecosystem. Participants stand the chance to benefit from mentorship opportunities, art exposure, exhibitions, and possible scholarship. These pathways and efforts aimed at shaping well-rounded artists ready for the global stage. Abiola states, “the competition also serves as a bridge, connecting emerging artists to established practitioners within the Nigerian and African art landscape.”

As the competition progresses, anticipation continues to build toward the final selection phase, where outstanding works will be showcased and recognised with prizes worth of millions of naira would be shared to deserving winners at the grand finale at Oriental Hotels, Victoria Island, Lagos, on the 20th of November 2025.

For now, however, the spotlight remains on the vibrant creativity unfolding in real time across Lagos and the entire nation.
