Victor Ekpuk Receives the 2025 Margaret Herz Demant African Art Award

Celebrated Nigerian-American artist Victor Ekpuk has been named the recipient of the 2025 Margaret Herz Demant African Art Award, recognizing his outstanding contribution to Contemporary African Art.

In an emotional statement shared after the announcement on his social media handle, Ekpuk expressed deep gratitude to the Friends of African and African American Art, the Trustees, staff, and the entire Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) community.

“I am deeply moved to be linked to Mrs. Demant’s legacy, which continues to elevate African voices and celebrate artistic brilliance,” Ekpuk said.

He also paid tribute to Professor Nii O. Quarcoopome, who nominated him for the honor.

“Nii’s dedication to illuminating the complexity and depth of African art has inspired so many, myself included. His belief in my work means the world, and I am very grateful for his support,” he added.

Reflecting on his creative journey, Ekpuk emphasized that African art remains his constant source of inspiration.

“These masterpieces are far more than relics of the past, they are vibrant stories of human ingenuity and resilience.”

Ekpuk dedicated the award to “the visionary artist ancestors” and to the scholars, collectors, and museum professionals who ensure the enduring power of African art resonates globally.

The Margaret Herz Demant Award celebrates individuals whose work has significantly advanced the appreciation and understanding of African and African American art.
